Karen and I flew to Guatemala today. Karen has an employment law seminar for several days in Antigua. We will spend a five days together, then I will stay until November 4. That way I can stay over and photograph a particular Day of the Dead celebration in the Guatemalan Highlands.
We flew into Guatemala City, where we rented a vehicle and then I drove from Guatemala City to Antigua. Guatemala City is a big, sprawling place. We didn’t stick around. Instead, we drove straight to Antigua. Antigua is pretty close as the crow flies, but as I quickly learned, driving in Guatemala is not always a fast thing to do. Lots of traffic on the one highway leading out of the City, lots of winding roads, and lots of passing slow moving cars and trucks. By the time we get to Antigua and check into our hotel, it is late in the afternoon. We go for a walk around town to get a feel for the place. but I don’t shoot. Sometimes it is better to just enjoy. Cool city. Ancient, Supposedly surrounded by volcanoes, although it is very cloudy and I can’t see any. But this is a beautiful colonial town, and I can see why it is a popular destination.
