I get tired of “bird on a stick” portraits pretty quick. Usually once I have shot a few and the bird is still sitting there, I will either set up and wait for action and behavior, or get as close as I can and catch really intimate details.
I did the latter for this Rufous Motmot portrait, putting a 2x teleconverter on my 500mm lens to shoot at 1000mm. Your technique and focus has to be perfect when you add teleconverters like this, but it can work!
