While leading last month’s workshop at Vermejo Park Ranch in New Mexico, we were exploring an old coal mining town. As I crawled through an open window to one of the houses, I found a very recently deceased bat on the floor of  one of the old houses.

After making sure it was in fact dead, I held if up for others to photograph, then our Vermejo Ranch guide, James, did the same for me. I had him hold the bat up to a backlit background to make the wings translucent and so you could see all the fascinating details. What an amazing little creature!
