Vermejo – Babes and Blooms

June 12, 2018 - June 16, 2018

“Babes and Blooms”

In June and July,¬†Vermejo Park Ranch¬†comes alive with newborn animals and abundant wildflowers, along with all the other amazing wildlife and landscape opportunities Vermejo has to offer. You can join us as we chase these photo opportunites at our “Babes and Blooms” photo workshop.

Led by our expert guide and naturalist, James Reidy, we will search for wildlife (especially searching for young bison, elk, deer, black bear, bighorn sheep, etc.) and meadows and mountain-tops filled with incredible wildflower displays. Geographically we go from the middle of Vermejo and its mid-elevation meadows upward to 12,000 feet mountaintops as we look for photo opportunities and unique experiences. (At our August workshop, we explore from the mid-elevations south to the prairies, including Vermejo ghost towns and in September, we photograph bull elk in rut and autumn aspens).

Cost is $2200. Program rates include lodging , meals, professional guides and on-site transportation. Company Store purchases, alcoholic beverages, staff gratuity and New Mexico State sales tax are not included. More information about my Vermejo workshops.

Contact me¬†with any questions. My cell phone is 214-213-4193. To register, email Vermejo¬†at¬†[email protected].

We will adjust our itinerary depending on the weather and those serendipitous opportunities that will likely present themselves. But this gives you an idea of what to expect.

Arrive at Vermejo at noon and get checked into your room and have lunch.

In the afternoon, after everyone arrives and has had a chance to relax from their travels, we will head out to explore the are around the lodge, where a resident heard of almost tame elk roam, along with a wide range of other animals and photographic opportunities.

We will return in time for a great dinner at the Lodge, and a well-deserved night’s sleep before the next day’s early start.

Early in the morning we will head out to ¬†Vermejo’s iconic Castle Rock, a huge rock outcropping in the middle of beautiful, wildflower-filled field. ¬†The area around Castle Rock is prime wildlife viewing area, so we will ¬†also look for Vermejo’s large bison herd, prairie dogs, perhaps check a favorite spot for golden eagles, and other animals. Old barns and stables are also fun to explore and photograph. We will search for the large bison herds, elk and pronghorn that love this area. ¬†If we get lucky, we will find newborn mule deer fawns to photograph. You never know what you might find. James and I ran into this bear following this routine!

Late in the morning we will return to relax and get lunch, with an opportunity for everyone to get help with their photo techniques and equipment.

Depending on the light and winds, we will go out to photograph wildflowers, a beautiful waterfall (especially if it is cloudy) and wildlife. After sunset, we will return to the lodge for a well-deserved dinner.

On day 3, we will start to head higher in elevation,¬†photographing¬†“The Wall” with the dawn light and in huge wildflower meadows. ¬†Last year, we ran into young coyotes pups playing in a field. ¬†and along mountain streams and meadows for animals and wildflowers.

Our exact itinerary will vary depending on what James and I have scouted beforehand and what areas are really “hopping.” We never know what we might find, like these coyote pups playing on a rock.

This is the day we head to the top of the mountain! We will look for aspen groves, alpine wildflowers and wildlife. We will end up on a mountain ridge above timberline as we search of huge herds of elk, bighorn sheep, and beautiful flowers like Alpine forget-me-nots. Not to mention, views to die for!

After we return, if anyone has the energy to do a little late-night light painting on Castle Rock, I will be game (especially since we sleep in on our last day).

Sunday you get to sleep in after the late night.

We will have have a chance to share images, recap our experiences and say goodbye! 10am checkout.
