Photographing old buildings is fun, but taking pictures of just the building itself can get really boring to me after awhile. (No offense to any hardcore architectural photographers out there).

What I like to find is something near the church that shows the life surrounding it and tells a bigger story. Sometimes it is people playing soccer in front of a church, like this image from Guatemala that I have posted before.

And sometimes it is something simple like the waving of colorful plastic flags hung from a church, like this one in Oaxaca, Mexico. A little bit of energy and motion helps put a little bit of life back into an old building.
