I was recently in the Rita Blanca National Grasslands in the Texas Panhandle shooting a holiday assignment for Texas Highways. I posted on that image yesterday. The Rita Blanca National Grasslands are a crazy quilt of federal land surrounded by private ranch lands in the shortgrass prairie. It is a fun place to explore and the area is absolutely dotted with lonely windmills under big open skies.

There is a magic out there, I think. Big storms, big clouds, beautiful light, all part of a never-ending drama that plays out on the High Plains. I love finding under-appreciated (and less-photographed) places like this. One evening, the afternoon clouds exploded with color as the sun set low on the prairie. I found a windmill to to anchor the image a bit and fired away.
